Social, Prevention and
Health Policy Research Department
Dr. Louis Gliksman, Director
The Social, Prevention and Health Policy Research Department is composed
of six units: Culture, Community and Health Studies; Health Systems Research
and Consulting; Population and Life Course Studies; Regulatory Policies
and Legal Controls; Social Factors and Prevention Initiatives; and Women's
Mental Health and Addictions. In addition to these six units, the department
has a small core of people who conduct relatively limited, community-based
evaluations and provide evaluation consultation to community groups and
agencies involved in addiction and mental health programming. The department
is also the physical home of the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU),
headed by Dr. Roberta Ferrence. The primary purpose of this department
is to conduct quantitative and qualitative research, both basic and applied.
Research gives unique value to CAMH endeavors, creating the information
that enables us to be among the world leaders in conceptual knowledge.
Our unusual coincidence of research, treatment, training, development,
dissemination and community services produces a "synergy" that
cannot be found in more specialized organizations. It allows us to develop
knowlege-based programs and services and bring them to the community.
It also allows researchers to set an agenda that is responsive to the
needs identified both by the research community and by communities in
Ontario.
The fundamental priority for our research is that it hold the promise
of reducing the burden of harm from mental illness and alcohol, tobacco
and other drug use in Ontario. Specifically, the information we produce
informs the research community, the public, the policy-makers and the
program developers. The bulk of the funding for this research comes from
external grants and contracts.
We disseminate our research to a wide variety of groups. We communicate
to developers, through reports and papers; to other researchers, through
peer-reviewed publications; to politicians, through position papers; and
to the general public, through media releases.
Researchers in the department are often directly involved in the product
development phase of projects, to ensure the research is translated into
effective resource materials. Ultimately, our work results in more effective
and timely programs and policies, which result in an improved health delivery
system, for mental health and addiction issues. These programs
and policies have been evaluated to assess their efficacy, impact and,
often, their cost-effectiveness.
