Clinical Research Department
Dr. Sidney Kennedy, Director *note
The Clinical Research Department (CRD) aims to promote the research,
treatment and education goals of the Centre by supporting the work of
those who produce new knowledge and by promoting the transfer of such
knowledge to evidence-based practice and the community at large. To this
end, we have initiated and supported a variety of projects, both within
and between departments.
One such initiative is the Family Practice Mood and Anxiety Research
Network, whose mandate is to support education and conduct clinical trials
in primary care settings. This is accomplished by identifying, recruiting
and training motivated and talented family physicians in the skills of
clinical trial research. To date, 20 family physicians are enrolled as
members of this network. To support this network and to inform the public
at large, the CRD also publishes a newsletter. The first publication,
Mind Mood and Mental Health, addresses issues of interest to the
public and is written in an easy-to-read and informative style. Topics
such as workplace depression and cultural diversity in the Depression
Clinic were featured. This newsletter is widely distributed in physicians'
offices, hospitals and drug stores throughout and to the north of the
greater Toronto area and has proved to be very popular. It is in its second
printing, with a total circulation of 7,500.
ecognizing the importance of health impact variables to the success of
grant applications, we sponsored a Centre meeting called "The Missing
Link: Adding the dimension of health services impact to our evaluations
of treatment outcomes." The proceedings will be published as an issue
of Scientific Update by Snell Medical Communications.
The CRD also played an important role in identifying and selecting new
staff for the Family Services and Opus 55 programs and has consulted in
the preparation and writing of grant applications and proposals with researchers
in the Anger Management Clinic, the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Clinic,
the Eating Disorders Clinic, the Dual Diagnosis Research Service, and,
in conjunction with the Addictions section of the CRD, with staff at the
Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.
Finally, in an effort to expand research capabilities, we provided seed
funding and participated in recruiting new staff in the Personality and
Psychopathology Section and in the Interpersonal Therapy Clinic. The "bridge"
between addiction and mental health has been identified as a research
priority.
The following material details the work of the five sections of CRD.
