The overall goal of this unit is to understand the processes, operating at individual, system and community levels, that are related to alcohol and other drug issues and to associated mental health issues. Based on this understanding, prevention programs are developed and disseminated to the appropriate targets. This unit conducts research into environmental and individual factors, and the extent to which they can be affected and with what impact.

A major area of our prevention research is the development and testing of cost-effective community interventions. Two other areas of focus are youth and alcohol-related violence, including studies on server training and environmental manipulations of bars to prevent violence. Other lines of work focusing on social and prevention activities include the workplace and various cultural groups.

In addition to ongoing research grants, members of this unit received research grants this year totaling $105,000, from national and international sources.
