Counselling Skills Training in Substance Abuse

Produced in collaboration with the University of West Indies, the Caribbean Institution on Alcoholism and Other Drug Problems (CARIAD), and the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission

Counselling Skills Training in Substance Abuse comprises three training videotapes:

Video No. 1 - Family Counselling

Video No. 2 - Individual Counselling

Video No. 3 - Group Counselling.

The series is geared toward prevention and early intervention mechanisms and will interest counsellors, educators and social workers, particularly those who practice in multicultural settings.

Included with each videotape is a Supplementary Guide Booklet, with suggestions about how to use the video, techniques, discussion points, references and a reading list. These booklets can also be purchased separately for use with groups.

The video examines the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and explains fetal alcohol syndrome. An excellent resource for prenatal-class teachers, public health nurses and libraries.

Motivation and Change

The key to success in addiction therapy is getting the client to admit a problem and change the behaviour related to the problem.
