Bridging Responses: A Front-Line Worker's Guide to Supporting Women Who Have Post-Traumatic Stress

Dr. Lori Haskell

Many women who seek help from front-line services have experienced past violence and trauma. Often they do not recognize that many of their difficulties might be associated with responses to complex post-traumatic stress. Bridging Responses is a resource for front-line staff who work with women -- in health care, literacy, corrections, housing and community services. This book offers information and tools to help recognize responses to post-traumatic stress in women's lives, and to establish a level of confidence that encourages women who have survived abuse and violence to consider referrals to appropriate services or resources.

First Stage Trauma Treatment: A Guide for Therapists Working with Women

Forthcoming Dr. Lori Haskell

Many women seeking treatment for depression, suicidal feelings, substance use problems, difficult or abusive relationships and self-inflicted harm are actually experiencing complex post-traumatic stress. While post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been recognized for some time, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (complex PTSD) is a recently recognized diagnostic category that better captures the range of adaptations and effects of trauma resulting from early and/or chronic childhood abuse -- abuse usually perpetrated in a larger context of neglect and deprivation.

Most mental health professionals recognize the challenges in offering help when a client's problems seem to be both complex and overwhelming, but they are often unsure of how first to intervene. First Stage Trauma Treatment: A Guide for Therapists Working with Women provides a conceptual framework for understanding women's experience of trauma, the basic components of treatment, and specific tools and strategies to use in beginning this work.

First Stage Trauma Treatment is written for a diverse audience: mental health and addiction professionals who actively treat women who are abuse survivors, and related caregivers who wish to understand more about the clients they serve. All readers will learn ways of increasing safety and reducing and stabilizing symptoms in the lives of the women abuse survivors with whom they work.

Women and Psychosis: An Information Guide

Pamela Blake, April A. Collins, Mary V. Seeman

Psychosis can be frightening, confusing and distressing. Some people who develop psychosis will only have one psychotic episode in their life, while others will go on to have a more serious and recurrent form of the illness.

Women and men often have different concerns about the impact of psychotic illness and effects of treatment on their lifestyle and life choices. This guide is written for women who have had a psychotic episode and for their families. It explores the issues women face as they recover from psychosis and as they make decisions to move ahead in their lives.

Women: What Do These Signs Have in Common? Recognizing the Effects of Abuse-Related Trauma

Recurring nightmares, intentional self-harm, substance use problems, ongoing depression, panic attacks, difficult relationships and gaps in childhood memories are just a few of the common effects of psychological trauma.
