The Concurrent Disorders Handbook
Forthcoming
Whether you work with people with addiction or mental health problems, some of
your clients will have co-occurring addiction and mental health problems, otherwise
known as concurrent disorders. If you are committed to understanding and caring for
your client as a whole person, then you need to understand what these problems are,
how they co-occur, and how you can help.
The Concurrent Disorders Handbook takes information about concurrent disorders
beyond academic and scientific discourse, and makes it accessible to a wide range
of readers. Each chapter in the book introduces different aspects of identifying,
understanding and treating concurrent disorders.
The first part of the book provides an introduction to the field of concurrent
disorders. The second part looks at the programs offered at CAMH as a model for working
with clients; the third section offers theoretical and therapeutic perspectives.
The book concludes by looking at what is being done at CAMH to expand the capacity
of our concurrent disorder services, and how that knowledge can be used in other
services and agencies to better serve clients.
The Concurrent Disorders Handbook draws on research and "expert consensus"
literature, as well as our own best practices. Our goal in sharing our understanding
and experience is to allow others to take advantage of the gains the Centre has made,
and to join in pursuing further knowledge in this area.
