Winning design ideas for historic asylum wall on display at Toronto City Hall

More than 100 submissions made to CAMH's Open Ideas Competition on the future of its historic east wall will be on display at the rotunda in Toronto's City Hall from July 14th to July 17th. Drug Treatment Courts Receive Additional Funding

The Toronto Drug Treatment Court and CAMH join together in applauding the announcement made today that the Government of Canada will provide additional funding for Canadian Drug Treatment Courts (TDTC). The TDTC is a voluntary program that provides court-supervised treatment for people addicted to cocaine or heroin, who have been charged with drug offenses involving those substances. Clients who complete the program receive a non-custodial sentence instead of the incarceration that they would normally be facing. The majority of clients have a long history of involvement with drugs and the criminal justice system. More....

Seven extraordinary Ontarians will be honoured for their Courage to Come Back from the challenges of living with mental illness and addiction at a gala awards dinner, which will feature an address by The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Hosted by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation, and presented by RBC Investments, the Tenth Anniversary Courage to Come Back Awards Dinner takes place Thursday, May 15, 2003 at the Westin Harbour Castle Conference Centre. Media Advisory: Interview Opportunity: Expert Available to Address Anxiety Concerns Regarding SARS and West Nile Virus

Media Advisory: Winners of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health's Wall Competition to be Announced

CAMH will announce the winners of their Open Ideas Competition at a reception to be held on Monday, May 5th, 2003. Over 120 entries have been received for the contest. The contest invited submissions and offered prizes for the most innovative ideas about how the historic wall along Shaw Street at the eastern edge of CAMH's 1001 Queen Street West property could be incorporated into CAMH's proposed redevelopment of the property.

Location Change for Celebration of Research Project for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth

(Toronto, Ontario - March 28, 2003) The celebration of the completion of a seven-month research project aimed at reducing violence and building strong youth and future leaders among African Canadian and Caribbean youth will now be held at the Ashanti Room, 836 Bloor Street West at the intersection of Shaw and Bloor. New Website to help Pregnant and Postpartum Women Stop Smoking

Up to one-quarter of pregnant women in Ontario smoke. The first website, www.pregnets.org, providing support for these women and those who are postpartum and their health providers was launched today by PREGNETS, a coalition of groups dedicated to preventing gestational and neonatal exposure to tobacco smoke.

Canada s First Multicultural and Multilingual Memory Clinic for People with Alzheimer Disease and Dementia

An estimated 1 in 13 or 364,000 Canadians over the age of 65 have Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia. Many of these individuals have a mother tongue other than English. Providing assessment and treatment for people from diverse ethnoracial and multicultural backgrounds will now be improved as the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) launches Canada's first Multicultural Multilingual Memory Clinic.

Ontario Drunk Driver Fatalities Decreased as Result of New Law Suspending Their Licences for 90 Days.

In the thirteen months after it was introduced, OntarioÌs Administrative DriverÌs Licence Suspension (ADLS) Law resulted in a 17% reduction in the proportion of fatally injured drivers who have blood levels over the legal limit, according to a new study by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) published in the May/June issue of the Canadian Journal of Public Health. The law requires that anyone charged with driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg% or failing to provide a breath sample would have their license suspended immediately for 90 days. More...
