Office of International Health
The major purpose of the OIH is to contribute toward the enhancement of addictions
and mental health care the world over, with a particular focus on developing countries
and with initial emphasis on Africa, India, Latin America and the Caribbean. Attention
will also be focussed on Eastern Europe.
This Office will focus on collaboration with regions that a) have substantial
drug problems and/or mental health needs, b) have the required personnel and resources
to sustain the program, and c) will be in the best position to help neighbours adapt
the program. Particular attention will be placed on the needs of rural and outlying
areas as urged by the WHO's 2001 World Health Report.
The OIH will work to:
- Develop and implement collaborative continuing professional education programs
for health professionals and other workers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the
Caribbean Basin.
- Strengthen the capacity of partners to effectively evaluate clinical and health
promotion outcomes of mental health and addictions interventions.
- Organize exchange programs and study visits for health professionals from a variety
of health-related disciplines, with priorities assigned to individuals from focal
areas as well as Eastern Europe.
- Provide seed grants for individual and program initiatives, of CAMH personnel
and programs, with an innovative international health focus.
- Ensure academic outcomes of all Office initiatives through in-depth evaluation
as well as support for local evaluative research, academic debate, publication and
dissemination.
