Geriatric Psychiatry

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program is a distinct specialty area which provides assessment, treatment, on-going community follow-up and, when necessary, inpatient hospitalization of older persons with severe mental health problems. These include clients with long-standing or newly diagnosed psychiatric disorders, as well as clients with disorders that typically have their onset in older age, such as dementia of the Alzheimer's type. Though "geriatric' traditionally refers to those over age 65, younger individuals under 65 who develop early onset progressive dementia are also served within the program.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program has one admission unit, one continuing treatment unit, four outpatient clinics and an intake team. It has been successful in helping individuals and families to maintain, restore and improve their mental/physical health; to prevent unnecessary hospitalization; and to allow them to function in their own environment for as long as possible.

The Geriatric Program is in the process of integrating with the Neuropsychiatry Prograam. This integration is anticipated to be completed by September 1, 2003.

Geriatric Admission Unit (GAU)

GAU is an acute, admission unit which focuses on stabilization of acute psychiatric crisis or management of acute behavioiural disturbances in the elderly. These disturbances may be related to cognitive impairment, psychosis or substance misuse. The ultimate goal is to reintegrate the client into the community.

Psychogeriatric Assessment Consultation and Education (PACE) Clinics

Community-based outreach teams provide a range of services to seniors. The clinics provide assessment and psychogeriatric consultation in the client's own environment. For registered clients, counselling, support, medication monitoring and home visits are all components of the psychiatric follow-up. The clinics also provide crisis services (during clinic hours); consultation to community agencies; advocacy, education and support to the clients' family members; and community education. The PACE Central and West locations also offer Day Programs. These programs provide organized therapeutic and recreational activities, classes on health and age related topics, and organized community outings. PACE East offers a weekly social/therapeutic group.
