Message from the President & CEO, Centre for Addiction & Mental Health

Dr. Paul E. Garfinkel

Dr. Paul E. Garfinkel
President & CEO, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

On behalf of the clients we serve, and each and every member of the staff and board at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, I extend sincere thanks to all our donors and volunteers. Your generosity with your time and your resources has a profound impact on the clients we serve at the Centre, and will continue to do so in the year to come. Your gifts enable improvements in immediate and direct patient care, and innovative research projects. You have brought about both compassion and solutions.

Thanks to you, we are looking ahead to a very bright future, which holds great promise and hope for those who live with mental illness and addiction.

For the past year we have been engaged in the process of consultation and planning for a brand new leading-edge facility which will create a hub by consolidating our operations at the Queen Street site, while maintaining satellite locations throughout the city. Unique in the world, the hub will integrate clinical care, research, prevention and education. It will become a health care, research and education village -- a people-centred place that supports our philosophy of client-centred care. We're envisioning a safe, comfortable village with buildings, streets, sidewalks, housing, client businesses, recreational facilities and a combination of public and private green spaces. The goal is to remove institutional stigma and provide a real community setting for client care.

We are looking ahead with great optimism, towards a future in which all those living with mental illness and addiction will realize their potential.

We hope you will continue to be a part of our future.

Band in the Park, the image on the cover of this report, was created by Toronto artist Barry Woo. It was selected from the works featured in Being Scene, which showcases works by artists who have received services from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Mr. Woo is also a gallery artist with the Creative Spirit Arts Centre, an arts centre for persons with disabilities. "For me," he says, "visual art is life."
