2000: The Virtual Gallery
This
special online version of Images 2000 parallels the show's catalogue page
by page, with four to six images on each page so that it shouldn't take
too long to download. You can amble from one to another, or you can go
directly to the works you are interested in if you know the name of the
artist or work itself. You can also download a PDF version of the catalogue
here, but please be advised a couple of images are missing (the images
logo on the front cover and the self-guided tour map).

Welcome
to Images 2000
(from the catalogue)
We are proud to bring you this celebration of the
work of artists who have received mental health and/or addiction services from the
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
The response to our request for art was overwhelming.
Making the selection for the exhibit was extremely challenging. From the 150 works
submitted, 46 were selected by a jury of local artists.
The energy in these works is varied, fascinating
and represents a broad range of artistic styles. Some of the artists created their
pieces specifically for Images 2000. Several have previously exhibited and sold their
art through private galleries; many have not.
The idea for Images 2000 sprang from the desire
to embrace and showcase our artists' works, and to create and maintain a permanent
exhibit space for art to enrich our surroundings.
We would like to thank the artists and the public
for their interest and enthusiasm. We hope you find the exhibit thought-provoking.
We are sure it will give you new insight into the value and power of art.

The artists at the Centre for Addiction and
Mental Health are getting a chance for broad public attention for the first time
at Images 2000, the Centre's annual art show.
Usually open only to family and staff,
this year's show welcomes the general public for the first time. The exhibition consists
of 46 works, selected from 150 entries by a jury of artists from the community. The
participating artists are enthusiastic about the show. "I am very pleased to
be a participant in this exhibition and I hope that my work resonates on some level
with viewers," says one artist, Erin Hayes. Says another, Julio Estany:
"The Images 2000 art exhibit gives the opportunity to a lot of us to express
ourselves."
It's a year of firsts for Images 2000: it's the
first time the work will be hung for a year; the first time a colour program will
be available free (so visitors can go on a self-guided tour); and the first time
the event will be kicked off with a special lecture by noted British art psychotherapist
Joy Schaverien. It's also only the second time all four of the Centre's founding
organizations will take part.
All artists whose work has been selected are paid
an exhibition fee and some of the work will be available for sale. During last year's
show, Foresight/Foursite, more than half the paintings were sold, with the proceeds
going directly to the artists.
A number of the Centre's artists have had formal
art training while others are self-taught. Some have had solo shows and exhibited
in various Toronto galleries, for others, this is their first public show.
"Places like the Centre's Queen Street site,
Creative Works Studio, Inspirations, and people like the staff at the Workman Theatre
have given me the confidence to continue with my art," says artist Tova McMillan.
Images 2000 was organized and produced by Susan
Beniston, Lisa Brown and Mary Seeman, and is one of a series of events
celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Queen Street Mental Health Centre, the 50th
anniversary of the Addiction Research Foundation and the 75th anniversary of the
founding of the University of Toronto's Department of Psychiatry.
