Promoting Children's Mental Health in Families Affected by Mental Illness
October 8, 2002
Children have lots of questions when someone in their family becomes ill. When
it is a mental illness, it often becomes a secret that nobody talks about. When children
don't have answers, they tend to come up with their own, which can be incorrect and
scary. This forum will explore the experience for children in families affected by
mental illness including the impact on parenting, risk factors for mental illness
including genetics and environmental stressors, how we can foster resiliency in children,
and strategies to help families talk about mental illness.
The forum will also profile a new resource to help children of depressed parents
understand their parents' disorder. The first storybook of its kind in Canada, "Can
I Catch it Like a Cold," written for children aged 5 to 9 years old, is published
by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and is designed for use by parents,
extended family, teachers and mental health professionals who want to address the
impact of depression in children's lives In partnership with the Mood Disorders Association
of Ontario.
